Epiloghi di Derek Walcott

Epiloghi

Le cose non esplodono:
vengon meno, sbiadiscono,

come il sole sbiadisce dalla carne,
come la schiuma esala nella sabbia,

come il fulmineo lampo dell'amore
non ha un epilogo tonante,

muore invece con un suono di fiori
che sbiadiscono come fa la carne

sotto la pietra pomice sudante,
tutto concorre a dare questa forma

finché restiamo soli col silenzio
che circonda la testa di Beethoven.

Endings

Thing do not esplode:
they fail, they fade,

as sunlight fades from the flesh,
as the foam drains quick in the sand,

even love’s lighting flash
has no thunderous end,

it dies with the sound
of flowers fading like the flesh

from sweating pumice stone,
everything shapes this

till we are left
with the silence that surrounds Beethoven’s head.
